What salt free water conditioners can and cannot remove

With any of the many salt free water conditioners available, you can eliminate the problems associated with hard water in your home. You can easily detect if water is hard or not by observing its effects. Hard water prevents soap from lathering up. It can also clog boilers and water piping after a while when lime scale begins to form. If consumed in large quantities, hard water can be very harmful to oneís health. For example, sea water is hard and can cause dehydration if it is consumed over a long period. This occurs because the free roaming ions in it can rob your body of vital water content. The chemical composition of hard water has higher than normal amounts of calcium and magnesium cat-ions (two positively charged ions). To the taste hard water is salty and through salt free water conditioners, the amounts of free roaming ions in it can be reduced to remove this water property. Today, turning hard water into soft water is an easy process. For instance, sunlight converts sea water into rain water (which is soft) through distillation. However, replicating the distillation technique is a costly process. This is where technology such as ion exchange procedures and reverse osmosis were invented as relatively inexpensive solutions. Industrial companies, whose processes give off high energy heat as a byproduct, can use distillation techniques to turn hard sea water into soft water for their use. In industry this technique makes the cost of fresh safe water for consumption inexpensive. The modern household does not have access to byproduct energy like industrial companies, and for this reason salt free water conditioners are practical and affordable solutions.

By introducing sodium ions that will easily bond with the cat-ions present in the hard water, salt free water conditioners can change the composition of the hard water. Resins, made from organic polymers, facilitate an ion exchange which eventually turns the water soft. Sodium used in the conditioning process can be increased as necessary if the concentrations of cat-ions are measured to be high so to counter the effects of the hard water elements. One primary downside of using resins is because of the effects the sodium can have to your body. Health complications may be made worse if resins are used. For example either you or a member of your household may be hypertensive, have complications of the kidney, or may be diabetic. Sodium in the water consumed can make these sorts of health issues more complicated. For such household members it is often advisable to use reverse osmosis filtration systems as these are capable of achieving the same goal that salt free water conditioners are capable of. Reverse osmosis technology provides a lasting solution for water conditioning problems and also provides filtration solutions to problems associated with other contaminants and pollutants.

The beginning step towards purchasing and installing a home water purification system should always begin with knowing what other problems (in addition to water hardness) you are faced with. An installation professional will help you remove your home as the cause of contamination problems through a detailed water test.
